L-1 Visas allow multinational companies to transfer qualified employees from a foreign office to a U.S. branch, parent, affiliate, or subsidiary. These visas are available in two categories: L-1A for managers and executives, and L-1B for employees with specialized knowledge.

To be eligible for L-1 status you must:

  1. Have worked for the foreign company for at least one continuous year within the past three years

  2. Be transferring to a U.S. office in a managerial, executive, or specialized knowledge role

  3. The U.S. company must have a qualifying relationship (parent, branch, affiliate, or subsidiary) with the foreign entity

  4. The petitioning company must demonstrate active business operations in both countries

L-1A visas are initially valid for up to 1 year for new offices and 3 years for existing offices, with extensions up to a maximum of 7 years. L-1B visas allow stays of up to 5 years. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 may accompany the L-1 holder under L-2 status, and L-2 spouses may apply for work authorization.
