What Is the J-1 Visa?
The J-1 visa is a nonimmigrant exchange visitor visa that allows individuals to participate in approved exchange programs in the U.S. These programs promote cultural exchange, education, and professional development, and are overseen by the U.S. Department of State.
Common J-1 categories include:
Students & Interns
Trainees & Teachers
Professors & Research Scholars
Au Pairs & Camp Counselors
Medical Graduates & Government Visitors
Each category has specific eligibility criteria, durations, and rules — but they all share the goal of mutual enrichment and skill-building.
